Toronto playwright John Mighton's acclaimed play The Little Years is to receive its European premiere at the Orange Tree Theatre, an Off-West End theatre-in-the-round in southwest London.

Told over five decades, the play is the story of Kate, a science prodigy whose talents go unnoticed. Neglected by a system that undervalues women, her spark slowly fades. Meanwhile her brother William emerges as one of the most successful writers of his generation.

Described as a "pocket-sized National Theatre" (The Guardian), the Orange Tree is dedicated to bringing little-known plays to new audiences.

Director Adam Barnard is a Canadian citizen who grew up in Toronto. His previous work includes Stephen Fry's Latin! at the King's Head ("One of the sharpest and best-acted hours of theatre I have sat through this year" Evening Standard) and three new plays with his company Activated Image ("One of the best new companies around" Edinburgh Evening News).

The cast includes Andrew Macbean (Royal Shakespeare Company), Cathy Rakoff (An Inspector Calls, West End) and Genevieve Swallow (TV's Red Dwarf).

The Little Years was first staged at Toronto's Theatre Passe Murraille in 1995. John Mighton's other work includes Possible Worlds, which won the Governor General's Literary Award for Drama. He also appeared in the Hollywood film Good Will Hunting.

The Little Years is presented as part of a double bill with a new translation of the Greek tragedy Hippolytus. Wednesdays to Saturdays 7.45pm; matinees Wednesday 16 & 23 June, and Saturday 26 June, 2.30pm. Audio described performances Wednesday 16 June 7.45pm and Saturday 26 June 2.30pm. Orange Tree Theatre, 1 Clarence Street, opposite Richmond train and tube station (District line, Silverlink / North London Line and South West Trains from Waterloo or Clapham Junction).
